An Indian captain, injured in his own cockpit, kept fighting. Passengers and crew intervened. An Israel-bound aircraft landed safely instead of becoming the scene of mass death.

Captain Smit Machchhar and the people who helped stop the September 30 Flydubai attack deserve recognition for something larger than nationality or politics: they acted to save other human beings. India’s prime minister described the captain’s actions as “the highest form of courage.”

Four American citizens were aboard, according to a State Department spokesperson cited by Fox News. That makes this more than a frightening overseas headline. Americans were directly exposed to the attack.

Nearly a week later, New Mexico’s congressional delegation should have something to tell its constituents.

### More than an early allegation

Initial reporting left important questions unanswered. Was this a cockpit dispute? A deliberate attempt to crash the aircraft? Terrorism?

Since then, the public assessment has become considerably clearer. UAE authorities have characterized the assault as an attempted terrorist act and identified the cockpit’s emergency crash axe as the weapon. Israeli officials have condemned it as terrorism. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee publicly called it a “terrorist act.”

Questions remain about the suspect’s precise motives, contacts and possible outside direction. Those questions deserve investigation—not speculation presented as fact.

But uncertainty about who might have directed an attack does not prevent an elected official from condemning it, recognizing the rescuers or explaining what Americans should know.

### What our website check found

On October 6, we reviewed the official newsroom listings of New Mexico’s five congressional delegates and searched their official websites for references to Flydubai, hijacking and the cockpit attack.

We found no incident-specific statement from Sens. Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Luján or Reps. Melanie Stansbury, Gabe Vasquez and Teresa Leger Fernández. We also found no incident-related guidance reassuring New Mexico travelers, explaining security implications or identifying steps their offices were taking.

This finding has limits. We did not contact their offices. The review does not establish whether they commented in an interview, posted on social media, received a private briefing or undertook work not reflected on their websites.

It establishes something narrower: we could not find a response in the official website material reviewed.

Those websites were not uniformly dormant. Several offices published other announcements after the attack. Their newsrooms carried statements about legislation, funding and other public matters.

Communicating with constituents is plainly something these offices know how to do.

### Reassurance requires substance

No congressional delegation can guarantee that every flight is safe. Nor does an attack aboard a foreign airline establish that domestic commercial flights face the same threat.

New Mexicans do not need frightening speculation. They also do not need an unsupported promise that nothing could ever happen here.

They deserve clear communication.

Condemn the attack. Recognize the people who prevented a catastrophe. Acknowledge that Americans were aboard. Explain whether there are any new precautions constituents should take—or whether officials have identified no reason to change their travel plans.

Tell us whether the delegation has sought a security briefing. Explain what questions it is asking about pilot screening and information-sharing.

The Trump administration has publicly addressed the incident. Vice President JD Vance said it was reviewing U.S. flight-security procedures while acknowledging that evidence of Iranian involvement was not conclusive. That distinction matters: leaders can respond without pretending every investigative question has been answered.

New Mexico’s representatives can do the same.

### A standard beyond party

This is not a demand that every elected official issue a release about every international event.

It is a judgment about this event: an officially identified attempted terrorist act aboard a passenger aircraft carrying Americans, stopped by extraordinary human courage.

Nearly a week is enough time to acknowledge those facts.

This standard should apply regardless of party. Condemning terrorism and communicating responsibly about public safety should not depend on who occupies the White House, who governs Israel or whether an incident fits a preferred political narrative.

The people aboard that aircraft faced an immediate, life-threatening test. They acted.

Our representatives face a far less dangerous responsibility: provide constituents with facts, perspective and evidence that someone is asking the right questions.

Courage saved the flight.

Leadership should follow.
