When federal Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents executed a pre-dawn search warrant at Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on October 12, neither Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) nor Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (NM-03) had seen a single line of the sealed warrant. They didn't know what evidence prosecutors presented to a federal magistrate judge, and they didn't know what records agents seized.
They jumped in front of law enforcement investigations anyway. Without evidence.
Within hours of the raid, Stansbury took to X to declare the search a "gross abuse of power," pledging solidarity with Omar against "weaponized" federal law enforcement. Leger Fernández went even further out on a limb, telling New Mexico voters the raid was merely "over paperwork filed when she was a child" and accusing federal agents of ransacking Omar's drawers for political intimidation. On October 26, both New Mexico lawmakers doubled down by placing their official signatures on a 175-member letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin demanding an end to the investigation.
Now, the firewall around Omar is collapsing—and Stansbury and Leger Fernández are left holding the receipts.
The "Childhood Paperwork" Myth Collides with Reality
Leger Fernández’s claim that federal agents raided a sitting member of Congress over "paperwork filed when she was a child" fell apart in less than three weeks.
On October 28, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington declined to unseal the warrant to protect an ongoing grand jury investigation, referring to the congresswoman in federal court filings as "Ilhan Omar Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Omar". By October 29, The New York Times reported that the federal probe is scrutinizing long-standing allegations that Omar entered into a sham marriage in 2009—as a 26-year-old adult—with Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a man suspected of being her brother, to commit immigration fraud.
Worse for the New Mexico delegation’s partisan spin, the Times revealed that an Obama-era federal investigation had already uncovered evidence supporting the sham-marriage allegation, stalling only over five-year statute-of-limitations questions. Agents in the current probe seized 17 items from Omar's home, including her passport, phones, and computers, while serving grand jury subpoenas to more than a dozen family members.
Even Minnesota Democrats are abandoning the talking points that Stansbury and Leger Fernández are still peddling. On Thursday, former Minnesota Democratic State Rep. Joe Radinovich—once chief of staff to Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey—publicly broke ranks on X, writing that "the allegation is almost certainly true" and that Omar's claims of a right-wing conspiracy "are almost certainly not".
If the grand jury proves Omar obtained her citizenship through marriage fraud and false statements, then every dollar of her $174,000 annual congressional salary—and every vote she has cast—has been bankrolled by New Mexican and American taxpayers under false pretenses. Yet from Albuquerque to Santa Fe, Stansbury—who spent 2023 hosting cozy "Coffee and Kulan" livestreams and SiriusXM radio hits with "my friend Rep. @Ilhan Omar"—and Leger Fernández haven't uttered a word of retraction.

A Patronage Racket Treating the Safety Net Like a Captured Cargo Ship

When Stansbury and Leger Fernández repost Democratic Women's Caucus statements claiming federal scrutiny of Omar and Minnesota's fraud scandals is just a "pathetic attempt to distract us", they aren't asking for patience. They are telling New Mexicans to look the other way on the largest social-services heist in modern American history.
For years, a political patronage racket in Omar’s Minneapolis district has treated American safety-net programs like a captured cargo ship—looting billions meant for hungry children, autistic kids, and the disabled:
- The $250M+ Feeding Our Future Scandal: Since 2022, federal prosecutors have charged at least 113 individuals—including 85+ defendants from Minnesota's Somali fraud rings—in brazen schemes to loot pandemic child-nutrition programs. Just this Wednesday, October 28, a federal judge sentenced Salim Said, co-owner of Minneapolis's Safari Restaurant, to 30 years in prison for a $44 million fraud scheme where he claimed to feed 6,000 needy children a day while FBI cameras caught roughly 40 people showing up.
- Omar’s Direct Ties to the Thieves: Omar celebrated her 2018 primary victory at Safari Restaurant and filmed a May 2020 promotional video praising the restaurant for handing out thousands of meals a day. Her former campaign staffer and "enforcer," Guhaad Hashi Said, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering after pocketing nearly $3 million through a fake youth nutrition site . State lawmakers also hammered Omar for authoring the 2020 MEALS Act, which stripped away the USDA verification guardrails that allowed operators like Safari to loot the program, and for refusing to turn over her communications with convicted defendants to the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention Committee.
- The $18 Billion Medicaid Looting Spree: Federal prosecutors warned in late 2025 that half or more of the $18 billion in federal funds supporting 14 high-risk Minnesota Medicaid programs since 2018 may have been stolen. Minnesota had to shut down its Housing Stabilization Services program entirely after payouts exploded to $300 million against a $2.6 million budget. And just on Thursday—October 29—FBI and state fraud agents raided two more Twin Cities autism therapy centers (which billed $34 million between them) following indictments of clinic operators accused of paying up to $1,500 a month in cash kickbacks to parents in the Somali community to enroll kids with fake autism diagnoses.
Trashing the Country That Welcomed Her—and Sent Billions Abroad
What makes Stansbury and Leger Fernández’s blind loyalty even harder for working-class New Mexicans to stomach is how openly Omar despises the country, the taxpayers, and the traditional faith-based values of the people footing the bill.
This is a congresswoman who welcomed American refuge, only to use her megaphone to dismiss the 9/11 terrorist attacks as "some people did something," morally equate the United States and Israel with Hamas and the Taliban for committing "unthinkable atrocities," and campaign just last week alongside streamer Hasan Piker, who infamously declared that "America deserved 9/11". In January 2024, addressing a crowd in Minneapolis in Somali, Omar boasted of her clout in Washington, assuring the room that "as long as I am in Congress, no one can take Somalia's sea" and that the U.S. government "would do what we ask it to do".
That entitlement ignores staggering American generosity. Since 2006, U.S. taxpayers have poured more than $3 billion in humanitarian and development aid into Somalia—including $770 million in the final year of the Biden administration alone—before the State Department had to suspend assistance to Somalia’s federal government in January 2026 after catching Somali officials seizing and destroying U.S.-funded food aid meant for starving civilians.
Whether in Mogadishu or Minneapolis, food aid paid for by American workers keeps getting hijacked—and Omar’s allies keep demanding that nobody ask questions.
What About New Mexico? 30 of 33 Counties in Poverty, Zero Outrage
Every dollar stolen from federal USDA child-nutrition pools or Medicaid funds in Minnesota is a direct hit on New Mexico. Federal safety-net budgets are finite, and when massive fraud rings loot those programs, Washington responds with nationwide clawbacks and punitive state error penalties that hammer the most dependent states in the country.
No state is more exposed than New Mexico:
- 30 of 33 Counties in Poverty: New Mexico’s statewide poverty rate sits at 17.8% compared to 12.5% nationally, leaving 30 of our 33 counties poorer than the nation as a whole—and reaching 33.2% in McKinley and Socorro counties and 24.3% in Chaves County.
- 90,276 Impoverished Kids (#50 in Child Well-Being): Across New Mexico, 20.5% of children live below the poverty line, with 10 counties topping 30% child poverty. Combined with ranking #1 in property crime and #2 in violent crime, New Mexico sits dead last (#50) in the nation for child well-being.
- #1 in SNAP Dependency (1 in 5 Households): Exactly 21.9% of New Mexico residents rely on SNAP—the highest share in the United States—including 25% of households in Chaves County, 30.1% in Luna, 37.7% in McKinley, and 40.7% in Guadalupe.
- 283,403 New Mexico Kids on Medicaid: Statewide, 57.3% of children under 19 rely on Medicaid—a majority of kids in 28 of our 33 counties.
Yet while New Mexico families depend on those lifelines to survive, our state’s benefit programs are bleeding hundreds of millions of dollars with zero oversight from our congressional delegation:
- The $168.6 Million Medicaid MCO Fiasco: Federal HHS Inspector General auditors caught New Mexico overpaying Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) by $168.6 million for enrollees who never received services—and failing to claw the money back. As a result, federal auditors ordered New Mexico to refund $119.1 million to the federal treasury while leaving state taxpayers holding the bag for another $50 million in unrecovered state general funds gifted to corporate MCOs.
- A $173 Million SNAP Error Crisis: In June 2026, a Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) report revealed that New Mexico’s SNAP improper payment error rate hit 14.6%—fourth-worst in the nation—exposing state taxpayers to up to $173 million in federal penalties while LFC evaluators testified that New Mexico’s Health Care Authority is "under-investigating fraud".
- Medicaid Scam Rings at Home: Just this July, the DOJ and New Mexico Attorney General prosecuted a $4 million Medicaid fraud scheme involving non-emergency medical transportation providers billing New Mexico Medicaid for phantom trips.
Where are the fiery X threads from Stansbury and Leger Fernández demanding New Mexico claw back the $168.6 million handed to Medicaid MCOs instead of sticking New Mexico taxpayers with a $119 million federal payback bill? Where are the congressional letters demanding an immediate crackdown on SNAP and Medicaid fraud in Santa Fe so the 283,403 New Mexico children on Medicaid aren't robbed?
There aren't any. Given the choice between fighting for 30 impoverished New Mexico counties or running interference for a Somali whose inner circle looted child food programs and whose own immigration file is before a federal grand jury, Stansbury and Leger Fernández made their choice. When the warrant is finally unsealed, New Mexicans shouldn't let them forget it.
